As you can see, the pit villages surround the town. Whilst people move houses freely (obviously) from one village to another each maintains its own identity and you often find families can trace their roots in this area to the original miners who sank the pits at the start of the 20th century or even a little before.

            The current generation, largely, do not have jobs connected with mining and are much more willing to move areas as required, and out of Doncaster itself in order to earn their livings.

Finningley Airport may well provide more jobs and opportunities for the area, though transport links have

yet to be worked out fully to everyone’s satisfaction. [216Kb]
